What is a Pie iron, mountain pie maker, and hobo pie maker?

Just a quick note: These all refer to the same thing. You know, long handled individual sandwich sized campfire cookers.

These are the pie irons we have. One is cast iron, one is aluminum. The kids prefer a pie iron with the longer handle and the littler ones find the cast iron pie iron quite heavy to hold over the fire, but it’s fine if there’s a grate to rest the pie iron on.

What can you cook in a hobo pie maker?

When it comes to cooking a mountain pie, expand your thinking to more than just pies! While that might be the most common pie iron recipe that people use a pie iron for, you can use them for almost anything.

The fact that it’s a pie iron just means that you can use a crust and have any type of ingredients hidden inside. Think cheese, jalapenos, meat, grilled veggies, or any type of fruit that you want.

A pie iron helps to cook food over the campfire in a fast and consistent manner. This means that you can cook mini pizzas, pies, sandwiches, and other great options without the worry of burning them or having the ingredients fall out into the fire.

How do you use a mountainpie maker?

Using a Mountain Pie Maker is as simple as putting your bread slices (or crust) on each side of the pie maker and adding in your ingredients to one side. Then, once you’re ready to cook it over the fire, you close the two sides together and hold it over the fire to cook.

Since most are made of cast iron, it will get hot quickly and heat in a consistent manner. This means that you just might be making the best grilled cheese sandwich recipe, ever.

Not all pie irons are cast iron, however. The others will need more care with rotating and moving out of direct flames.

How to clean mountain pie makers?

Cleaning can be a bit of a tricky process depending on what you cooked in your pie irons.

Many campers will coat the side of the bread (or crust) sitting against the iron with butter or magarine. This can make cleaning easier as foods are less likely to stick to the iron.

However, we find that by omitting the butter, the pie irons aren’t very dirty after use. They will have some charred bread and soot from the fire on them. They might also have a few pieces of burnt bread or cheese. But, I find that they are easier to clean than if they were covered in oil.

If I feel a need to clean them I’ll add them to my dish water at the end. We also bring them inside at the end of our camping trip to give them a good scrub in the kitchen sink, just as we do with all our camp kitchen cooking equipment.

If you have easy access to hot running water while camping, then just wash them as you would any other cooking vessel.

But, what if they are cast iron? Well, if you’d like to go ahead and season them and treat them like a cast iron pan, you can do that. We do not.

Given that I keep these in the camper all the time I really don’t want any food odors or residu being left on them that might attract little critters.

FAQs

How to use a pie iron when camping? ›

Grease the pans and get cooking.

Clasp the irons shut, then lay flat over a bed of hot embers or coals to cook evenly. You can use your gut to tell you when to flip, but don't hesitate to open them up and check every so often. Each fire is different and will cook at a different rate.

Are pie irons worth it? ›

One of the things I like about cast iron (which most pie irons are made of) is that it holds and distributes heat evenly, which is important when cooking over a campfire with uncontrollable heat. Food seldom burns, so even the novice can turn out a perfectly cooked meal every time.

How long do you cook a pie iron for? ›

Close the lid. Cook over coals for 20 to 25 minutes, flipping the pie iron over every five minutes. Remove from the fire. Open the pie iron and check for doneness.

What do you grease a pie iron with? ›

When you buy a pie iron, even if it says that it is pre-seasoned, you should still season it yourself to ensure that your food won't stick. To season it, you apply a thin layer of vegetable oil to the cast iron. The cast iron part will unscrew from the handle. Then bake it in your oven at 450 degrees for about an hour.

Can you use a pie iron on a stove? ›

Models with shorter handles can also be used on the stovetop, especially if you have a gas range. However, even electric stoves work well with pie irons. Even on a rainy day you can have the experience of campfire cooking with a pie iron by your side.

What is another name for a pie iron? ›

A pie iron—also called pudgy pie iron, sandwich toaster, snackwicher, toastie maker—is a cooking appliance that consists of two hinged concave, round or square, cast iron or aluminium plates on long handles. Its "clamshell" design resembles that of a waffle iron, but without that appliance's honeycomb pattern.

Do you need to preheat a cast iron pie pan? ›

Preheat your cast iron bakeware before adding your batter or dough for crunchy edges on cornbread, pizza, and biscuits. Prefer a delicate crust? Add your batter for cakes, pies, and other soft baked goods directly into your room-temperature pan. No preheating needed!

Is it worth buying a pie maker? ›

However, nailing the perfect pastry can be fiddly, and if you're short on time or are just after something to make dinner time that little bit easier, the investment in a good quality pie maker is a worthy one.

How to clean pie iron after use? ›

Scrub surfaces with just water until all food remnants are gone. Heat over the fire until the cast iron surfaces are bone dry and the pie iron is reheated. Remove from the heat and spray all surfaces of the cast iron with spray cooking oil. An aluminum pie iron can be washed with soap and water.

Do you grease a cast iron pie pan? ›

If you're going to serve the pie in the same dish it bakes in, there's no need to do so, but it also can't hurt. As King Arthur's expert bakers note, a quick spritz of cooking spray will make it easier to remove that first slice of pie, "especially if any sticky filling has seeped out and is acting like glue."

What is the best temperature to heat pies? ›

Experience has taught us that a good pie-in-the mouth temperature is around 62-65°C – just above the health regulation requirements of 60°C. Expertise has also taught us that a pie heated above 70°C will gradually lose moisture, and at 80°C it will lose a lot more moisture. And nobody wants a dry pie.

Can you put parchment paper in a pie iron? ›

You'll want to start by cutting your parchment to be just smaller than the size if your pie iron. If the parchment is outside the pie iron, it will catch fire, and you definitely don't want that. You'll need two pieces of parchment for each cookie you want to make.

What is a campfire pie iron? ›

In its most basic function, a Pie Iron is a way to cook a toasted sweet or savory sandwich or hand pie over an open fire. This is done by using a cast iron cooking compartment that is formed by two metal castings that hinge together like a clam shell.
