Chapter 2. Caring for your computer

Though your computer is designed to function reliably in normalwork

environments, you need to use common sense in handling it. Byfollowingthese important tips, you will get the most use andenjoyment out of yourcomputer.

    Important tips:

Be careful about where and how you work

v Do not leave the base of your computer in contact with yourlap or anypart of your body for an extended period when thecomputer is functioningor when the battery is charging. Yourcomputer dissipates some heat during

normal operation. This heat is a function of the level of systemactivity andbattery charge level. Extended contact with your body, even throughclothing, could cause discomfort or, eventually, a skinburn.

v Place liquids away from your computer to avoid spills, andkeep yourcomputer away from water (to avoid the danger ofelectrical shock).

v Store packing materials safely out of the reach of children toprevent therisk of suffocation from plastic bags.

v Keep your computer away from magnets, activated cellularphones, electrical appliances, or speakers (within 13 cm/5 in).

v Avoid subjecting your computer to extreme temperatures (below5C/41For above 35C/95F).

    Be gentle with your computer

v Avoid placing any objects (including paper) between thedisplay and thekeyboard or under the keyboard.

v Do not drop, bump, scratch, twist, hit, vibrate, push, orplace heavy objectson your computer, display, or externaldevices.

v Your computer display is designed tobe opened and used at anangleslightly greater than 90 degrees. Do not open the displaybeyond 135

degrees, as this might damage the computer hinge.

    Carry your computer properly

v Before moving your computer, be sure to remove any media, turnoffattached devices, and disconnect cords and cables.

v Be sure your computer is in standby or hibernation mode, orturned off, before moving it. This will prevent damage to the harddisk drive and dataloss.

    12/72

v When picking up your open computer, hold it by the bottom. Donot pickup or hold your computer by the display.

v Use a quality carrying case that provides adequate cushion andprotection.Do not pack your computer in a tightly packed suitcaseorbag.

Handle storage media and drives properly

v If your computer comes with an optical drive such as CD, DVD,orCD-RW/DVD drive, do not touch the surface of a disc or the lenson thetray.

v Wait until you hear the CD or DVD click into the center pivotof an opticaldrive such as CD, DVD, or CD-RW/DVD drive beforeclosing the tray.

v When installing your hard disk, diskette, CD, DVD, orCD-RW/DVD drive, follow the instructions shipped with your hardware, and apply pressureonly where needed on the device.

    Take care in setting passwords

v Remember your passwords. If you forget a supervisor or harddiskpassword, Lenovo authorized service provider will not reset it,and youmight have to replace your system board or hard diskdrive.

    Other important tips

v Your computer modem might use only an analog telephonenetwork, orpublic-switched telephone network (PSTN). Do not connectthe modem to aPBX (private branch exchange) or any other digitaltelephone extension linebecause this could damage your modem.Analog phone lines are often usedin homes, while digital phonelines are often used in hotels or officebuildings. If you are notsure which kind of phone line you are using, contact your telephonecompany.

v Your computer might have both an Ethernet connector and amodemconnector. If so, be sure to connect your communication cableto the correctone, so your connector is not damaged.

v Register your Lenovo products with Lenovo (refer to the Webpage:www.lenovo.com/register). This can help authorities returnyour computerto you if it is lost or stolen. Registering yourcomputer also enables Lenovoto notify you about possible technicalinformation and upgrades.

    v

Only an authorized Lenovo notebook repair technician shoulddisassembleand repair your computer.

v Do not modify or tape the latches to keep the display open orclosed.

v Take care not to turn your computer over while the ac adapteris pluggedin. This could break the adapter plug.

v Store your external and removable hard disk, diskette, CD,DVD, andCD-RW/DVD drives in the appropriate containers or packagingwhen theyare not being used.

    Chapter 4. Recovery options

    Introducing Rescue and Recovery

If Windows is not running properly, you may need to do thefollowing:

v Get the current system information.

v Diagnose and troubleshoot a problem.

v Rescue a file from your Windows environment or restorebacked-up files, provided you have made backups by use of theThinkVantage Rescue andRecovery program.

    v Configure your computer.

All this can be achieved from the ThinkVantage Rescue andRecovery

workspace. To start ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery, turn onthe computerand while the initial screen is displayed press theLenovo Care button. Formore information about using Rescue andRecovery features, see theRecovery overview section of the AccessHelp.

    Restoring factory contents

Instead of providing a recovery CD or a Windows CD with yourcomputer,Lenovo provides simpler methods of accomplishing the taskstypicallyassociated with these CDs. The files and programs forthese alternativemethods are on your hard disk, which eliminateshaving to locate misplaced

CDs and problems associated with using an incorrect CDversion.

The complete backup of all the files and programs that Lenovopreinstalled onyour computer resides in a hidden protected area, orpartition, of the harddisk. Although hidden, the backups in thepartition consume hard disk space. Therefore, when checking thecapacity of your hard disk according toWindows, you might note thatthe total capacity of the disk appears to besmaller thananticipated. This discrepancy is explained by the contents ofthehidden partition.

The Product Recovery Program contained within this area enablesyou torestore the complete contents of your hard disk to the samestate as it waswhen originally shipped from the factory.

    Notes:

    1. When you recover your system, you need to select the Onposition of thewireless radio switch on the computer. If you forgetto select the On

position of the wireless radio switch, your wireless networkcard will notbe recognized, and the wireless card driver will notbe included in yoursystem.

    2. The recovery process might take up to 2 hours.

To recover the hard disk to its original contents, do thefollowing:

Attention: All of the files on the primary hard disk partition(usually drive C)will be lost in the recovery process. However, before any data is overwritten, you will be given the opportunity tosave one or more files to other media.

    1. If possible, save all your files and shut down your operatingsystem.

    2. Turn off your computer for at least 5 seconds.

    3. Turn on your computer. Watch the display carefully while yourPC starts. While the initial screen is displayed, press the LenovoCare button. TheThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery workspaceopens.

4.Click Restore your system, select Restore my hard drive to theoriginalfactory state, and follow the instructions on thescreen.

    Recovering data

If you performed a backup operation using the Rescue andRecoveryprogram, you also have one or more backups stored thatreflect the contentsof the hard disk as it existed at variouspoints in time. These backups mightbe stored on your hard disk, ora network drive, or on removable media, depending on the options youselected during the backup operation.

You can use either the Rescue and Recovery program or theThinkVantageRescue and Recovery workspace to restore the contentsof the hard disk to anearlier state using any of the storedbackups. The ThinkVantage Rescue andRecovery workspace runsindependently of the Windows operating system. Therefore, you canstart it by pressing the Lenovo Care button whenprompted duringstartup.

After the ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery workspace opens youcanperform a recovery operation, even if you are unable to startWindows.
